Ressources wins European Week for Waste Reduction award for its Big Solid'R clothes collection

RREUSE member Ressources, won the ‘Association and NGO category’ award for its Big Solid’R clothing collection during the 2012 European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR). Solid’R is a label, valid in the Benelux region, that can be used by social enterprises that subscribe to a charter of ethical management of second hand textiles. In Belgian Wallonia and Brussels, these organisations include Terre, Les Petits Riens, Oxfam Solidarité, Oxfam-Magasins du monde, La Poudriére, De bouch a Oreille – Laressourcerie,  Carré, Rouf and La Fol’Fouille.

In the space of one week, the organisations using the Solid’R label managed to collect 500 tonnes of clothes using 3360 containers and 100 shops throughout Brussels and Wallonia.  This in itself is impressive but the aim of the campaign was much deeper:

It was an awareness raising campaign geared towards sensitising people who donate their clothes to Solid’R organisations that their action support job creation in Belgium as well as solidarity projects both within and outside of the country.

In short, with 500 tonnes of textiles, Ressources calculate that you can create 22 employment opportunities. 

The action included an exposition of ‘relooked’ textile containers by local artists, the decoration of a train station by a school and a guided tour of a textile sorting centre and reuse shops.

The award comes at a timely moment. Today’s global prices for second hand textiles are rocketing and as such this is attracting interest from private (and also illicit) actors who are seeing working with textiles as very profitable which is at the expense of job creation at local level that social enterprises provide. Being transparent about how the textiles are managed, will hopefully engage the consumer and also municipalities that working together with social enterprises is the preferred choice in order to really benefit from the social value the sector has to offer.
