New French eco-tax on furniture aims to boost reuse and recycling

new eco-tax on furniture sold in France introduced to help finance collection, reuse and recycling of furniture waste.

In France 2 million tons of furniture waste is produced per year. Since the 1st of Mai 2013 a new tax on furniture sold in France has been introduced in order to help finance the collection, reuse and recycling of furniture waste. The contribution amounts to 20 cents for a chair up to 18 Euros for a big cabinet. The goal is to decrease the amount of waste ending up in landfill or incineration.

The furniture collected that can still be reused is entrusted only to social enterprises for restoration and repair. These organisations include Emmaüs France and Réseaux Ressourceries, members of the RREUSE network. As such the scheme strongly recognises the social value of the reuse sector.
